My classmates think I'm mentally retarded?

How do I get everyone to stop patronizing me???

I barely ever talk in class, and I sound like an idiot when I talk because I mumble and kind of stutter, since I'm self concious and shy. Because of this, they think I'm mentally ill that belong in an L.D. (learning disability) class. Hell, the first semester I was put in an L.D. class just because of how I acted. They didn't care about my A's and B's at all until my teacher talked to the counselor. I tried talking to the counselor about it, but she didn't care. I had to wait one whole semester to get put in a normal class.

My classmates think I'm mentally retarded?
Man that's awful.

Do you have any friends?

Well I think you should stop stuttering and murmuring.

You know; suck it up! :)

Good Luck!

Sure you'll be doing better soon I hope!

Reply:Wow, that's horrible ... it's a sad indictment of the education system.

I love the way people are saying "Get confident, stupid" to you - how are you meant to regain confidence when everyone thinks you're mentally challenged and you've even been forced into a special class unnecessarily?

Is there any way you can change schools and just start again? I feel as if a sympathetic teacher and counsellor could have stopped this situation occurring.

Also, if you stutter a little you could always have speech therapy, if it bothers you - personally I find mild stuttering very attractive. Singing is great for stuttering as well.

Is there something you're really good at (sport, drama, music, art etc) that you could follow in order to increase your esteem and self-confidence?
Reply:Just tell them''heah i have a speech impediment not a brain impediment.[so does Sylvester Stylone,Arnold Swartzenagger and many more ]And then continue to do good and get good grades and let that speak for you. Sometimes when we get stressed we talk to fast or before we have time to think through exactly what we want to say.Retardation is a learning disability and can be mild to severe and some of the sweetest people i have ever met have learning disabilities and are classified as retarded.
Reply:or maybe you're a retard?
Reply:Wow that sucks...kinda funny though too. I would practice speaking in front of a mirror because it seems they think your retarded because of your people skills. If you improve that maybe the assumptions will disappear.
Reply:Ouch tough break,

Kids can reallly be hard to get through cause they are cruel and persistent, so i suggest in order to get the concept of you not being mentally retarded through your head, you take a stanze and for the next person to dis crap on you,

retaliate and RETRIBUTION!!

unforutantely the other possible alternatives won't be as effective but would take a while for them to get accustomed too, but it is more polite and courteous, so...

just try and improve your self-conscience and improve your appearance to others and your general nature. Be more outgoing.
Reply:Hey they pretty much did the same thing to my older brother. I have a lot of poem books an I use to make him read out loud some of them every night to me. It's better than actually reading a book because I book the story just keeps going an going but a poem ever couple of words you have to stop, then start up again. It really did help him. Now he doesn't stutter really at all. You should read some poems out loud at night in your room or outside maybe the backyard. You should also try to have a little more self confidence in you. That will help you a lot too. Good luck sweetheart. :):):)
Reply:Gain confidence. If you believe in yourself, you give people a reason to believe in you. It's ok that you read the comment of the person after me. But listen people can see if you're self-conscious. This girl asked me if I was shy, and I told her, "No I just don't like people." Be confident, and always think that you deserve respect and you have to give it to. You must give people respect and be helpful, people like that. Good Luck.
Reply:well...what are YOU going to to about it??????
Reply:Even if you don't have an inherited stuttering problem, the speaking tips you can get from "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" published by The Stuttering Foundation of America and found in part online (do a search for it) may help you. Taking your teacher and the counselor the brochure for teachers (under "brochures for all ages" at www.stutteringhelp.org) will educate them and may help you. You might also check out the brochure on cluttering to see if you might have that. There are millions of people who deal with this same or similar situation, and it is sad that it still happens. Some people just will never know how to treat others. You will come out ahead in the long run, though. Look at Liberace; he was teased when he was in school, but he laughed all the way to the bank when he got older!
Reply:People, especially kids, are judgemental. The see a person with a mental disability as a retarded person. It is cruel to do such. People with epilepsy are not retarded, yet, when one has a seizure, others become afraid and use the word "retarded" as a cruel epithet. People with stuttering problems, shy people, downes victims, autistic people, people with learning disabilities, and people like me, who have neurofibromatosis, are all taunted and called "retards". It is not fair, and it is cruel. And even a person who is "retarded" should not suffer such taunts. They have a process that slows (or retards) their functional thinking. It is not a contagious disease, and should not be treated as such, And the person with these conditions, it is not their fault they have them. So why make them feel guilty about having such disabilities? I know one thing. When I see a person being teased, I can only wish it was the other way around. That the teaser had the condition, and the victim was normal. Maybe if the victim was normal, then she or he would not tease as other "normal" people do.
Reply:Then Be Aggressive %26amp; Speak Up....!!
Reply:guess its time for a change then? maybe do you but different.
Reply:If you don't feel comfortable talking in class, don't, unless you're called on or something. Don't pay attention to them, you don't have anything to prove to anyone. Just keep getting those good grades. Really, who cares what they think of you? They aren't going to give you a house or a college degree, so let them be stupid and waste their time seeing who they can pick on.
Reply:First, there's a difference between mental illness and mental disability. The terms shouldn't be used interchangably.

Maybe you can try talking in class more -- I know it's probably hard for you, but the more you do it, the easier it will become for you.

And your classmates will notice that you're making an effort to "come out of the shell" more, and they'll likely start treating you differently.

Reply:been there.. and had to change all my image (inner image) to survive high school, u have to stick up for yourself, that makes u feel better and gain confidence.. when u start to talk they take u as one of em and stop thinking u are retarted.. ohh and that slutter mumble thing happens cause u care too much about what they say, just remember they are people like u, nothing special so have no power to judge u
Reply:Beat the everloving sh*t out of someone.

Seriously, they'll never call you a 'tard again.
